(15.3) Take a SELFIE

This class has been extremely rewarding for me because I've really pushed my conceptual thinking into new directions through all new materials through the use of "new media." Not only have I learned how to use different technological mediums, I've learned how these tools can be used for play and inquiry based learning. AL though I'm pretty upset that I didn't get to spend time with certain mediums, I am confident that I can take these ideas further both in my own practice, and my practice as an educator. Not only do these mediums bring allow for interdisciplinary art education, but it also allows for a truly student centered experience. Everyone can be working on something different and still achieve the same goal like "make an led light up." The constraints of the materials allow the prompt to be so open-ended that there can be differentiation in the classroom, and everyone can find an entry point into the learning.
My personal learning objectives are as follows:
  • Increase my confidence when it comes to using digital tools. I previously stated that I attempted to learning the Adobe Creative Suite and coding language. I believe I gave up too quickly because it was too unfamiliar to me, but now I want to try again, and try harder and see how far I can get. I don't want fear of a new medium to stop me from creating and learning.
  • I'm also interested in the idea of "tradigital" art. I want to combine my traditional art practices with digital art practices. Not only having them combine in the tradition way of one practice building on the other, but also working in the sense that the two ways have  conversation with each other. (I recently felt like I accomplished this with the Impact25 project).
  • In addition to this, I want to become proficient in digital painting and art. I really enjoyed that lesson.
  • I'm interested in incorporating scanography as a personal practice as well as a pedagogical tool. As digital technology use increases day after day, I want to figure out how to incorporate it into students lives without overwhelming them, but also taking into account that they have a wealth of knowledge that might not be best served through traditional means. Not everyone is Picasso, and that's alright.
  • I also find the amount of resources for this class really helpful and I think that I want to amass my own personal connection of resources and share it with everyone because I think these resources can be used school wide and doesn't necessarily have to be just for art. I want to foster an interdisciplinary curriculum and I think this is a helpful way to start other teachers down that path.

I believe I was able to achieve all of my personal goals, which is amazing cause there are so many! I am definitely more confident in what I'm doing and I believe it shows especially through my midterm and final project. I used scanography for my final presentation binder for Judy's class (which I used inDesign to create!), and I've been doing some more digital painting--I wouldn't say I'm proficient  but I enjoy the process a lot more now. Also, The nature of the class helped me collect resources that I can use in my future practice, so I've been collecting them in a word document for future use. Overall, this was a very enjoyable class and I wish we had more time to really dive in deep with some of the more difficult/ time consuming mediums, but I an happy with all that I was a able to learn.
