(6.2) Creative Potential of Video

Although I was not a fan of the video project, I still see the potential for its use. It was fun to work with in a group but when it came to figuring it out alone it became extremely daunting. Luckily, iMovie is fairly simple (simpler than Adobe Premiere Pro that's for sure). I believe that I shut down because it really removed me from my comfort zone, but in art that is a good thing. You can't to challenge students to move outside of their comfort zone and explore different avenues of art. They're young and might never know what they really life if they're not given the opportunity to try many different things.
The really fantastic thing about this video editing software, also, is that anyone can do it for relatively cheap. Every computer comes equipped with the software or free versions can be downloaded for next to no money. With Macs, it's iMovie, and with PCs, its Windows Movie Maker. I think a really good way to ease into film editing/ making is to start with your phone. Phones allow you to cut and edit video and rearrange it to your liking. With apps you can overlay and edit your own audio or provided audio. From there students can move on to more and more complex technology and eventually lead into the industry standards if your school has the funding and you are competent in the software.
I don't want to give up to easily, so I will try to use Premiere again. How can I teach kids to try their best if I'm not actually doing the safe. Practice what you preach is extremely cliché but it is a principle I want to endorse and instill in my students. However, I need to be very careful and teach it in a way that all students will want to be engaged with the material. I believe copying an already established video is a really great way to do that because it allows you to focus on the more technical aspects first before trying to establish storylines and set designs and the more production heavy aspects of video creation, which can get really complicated really quickly.
