(3.2) Peppler and Baym

In the article by Peppler, Peppler discusses the use of technology in a positive light. I enjoyed
the idea of "interest based learning." This model allows Students to learn within the context of their own understandings and interest and they absorb information a lot faster. This method allows students to commit more information to long term memory as well. It was refreshing to hear about technology from this angle because most of the time you hear about technology in a negative light. I think this push againsttechnology is occurring because the people advocating against it don't fully understand it and are afraid of changing their way of life. I think Teacher's College is training teachers to move towards this interest based, student centered learning approach, and as a student I obviously support this push. I actively support It. I think this is the best way to really get students engaged in learning and wanting them to come to school. The section on teen creators made me realize that if we don't keep up with the technology, most students won't even need our expertise anymore because they'll be way more advanced than us.
In Baym's article, I enjoyed how they talked about technology as a deterministic tool. When in
actuality, we are determining what technology does and how and when it does it. It reminded me of a book I read in undergrad that discussed internet and social media. People are creating their own relationships and social networks across the globe because the people next to vs might not share a connection with Us. technology Is opening up so many possibilities for us that it would be unwise for us to say it's determining our lives.

The book is called Networked: The New Social Operating System by Rainie Lee
